How the Dolls Are Made

Each of Ann Adachi's ball-jointed dolls is individually sculpted from clay by hand.

She shapes the face and body, refines the joint structure, and carefully balances the doll's form, movement, and presence. Layers of paint are then applied before the eyes, hair, and other details are finished, gradually bringing the doll to life.

These are not identical dolls made from a single mold. Each is a one-of-a-kind work with its own expression and story. Creating a doll takes a great deal of time, and Ann considers that accumulated time part of the finished work.

The Character of the Work

Ann Adachi's dolls hold emotions found in stillness and stories that words cannot fully express.

Rather than presenting a single clear emotion such as joy or sorrow, she creates dolls whose expressions may feel different depending on the viewer's memories and state of mind.

Scale, sculpting, color, hair, gaze, and posture vary from one work to the next. Her practice ranges from small dolls to large-scale works nearly two meters tall, with each form developed to suit the presence of that particular piece.

Photographs cannot fully convey their scale and physical presence. Whenever possible, Ann invites viewers to experience the dolls in an exhibition space.
